The second edition of the Night at the Museum franchise, Battle of the Smithsonian has all of the great laughs and adventures of the first film plus plenty of surprises along the way. Call it a children's movie if you must, but really it's a great comedy that people of all ages will enjoy watching, particularly if you are a big Ben Stiller fan.

Of course the first movie took place in New York, but this one as the title implies takes place at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. While Ben Stiller's character in the first movie was a reluctant participant in the craziness, this time he's out to save the day, because the Smithsonian is going to lock away the ancient artifact that makes it possible for all of those historical characters to come to life.

The bottom line is that this is one of those movies that's just hard not to live. Since you expect some of the craziness, it's much different from the first film, but there is still plenty of action, laughs and surprises along the way. A great movie to pick up to watch with your kids, or even to entertain yourself or a date. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is one of the best comedy and children DVDs of 2009 and you'll love the special features and bonuses as well.

Ben Stiller wrestles with extinct beasts, historical figures, and meddling monkeys in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, the sequel to the popular 2006 special-effects extravaganza. This time, the ancient Egyptian tablet (the one that brings all the exhibits at New York's Museum of Natural History to life at night) is being shipped off to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.--which, as the movie diligently tells us, is the largest museum in the world. Naturally, former museum guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) heads down to rescue it (and, by extension, keep his magical museum friends alive). He ends up fighting with a nasty pharaoh who talks like Boris Karloff (Hank Azaria, The Simpsons) and falling in love with Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams, Enchanted). All the old gang are along for the ride, including Dexter the monkey; much face-slapping and special effects ensue. There aren't many surprises, but Battle of the Smithsonian is cheerful enough to entertain everyone who enjoyed the first movie. Extras include commentaries by the director and the writers, the usual self-congratulatory making-of featurette, deleted scenes that are actually as good as the rest of the movie, an alternate ending, and an entirely pointless second disc about Crystal, the capuchin monkey who plays Dexter (the monkey disc has less than a half-hour of material, including two mediocre games). The great supporting cast from the first movie returns, including Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, and Robin Williams. --Bret Fetzer Stills from Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Click for larger image) Â

Julie and Julia is a movie that reached not just critical acclaim, but a strong fan following for the stellar acting, wonderful depiction of these interesting people and ultimately, the tribute to icon Julia Child that Meryl Streep provides. The movie is about two women actually, Julia Child, the accomplished chef and TV host, and Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, a woman who wants to cook every recipe in one of Child's books, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

The movie is actually a true life story, and it covers both Powell's journey in this endeavor and Child's life and time as well, particularly her relationship with her husband. Powell blogged her journey, and it was much more than just a challenging culinary trip. It was as much about self discovery, life calling, passion, zest for life and so much more than it was about food.

If you're looking to find a cheap copy of Julie & Julia on DVD, then you're in the right place. It's one of the feel good movies of the year, and fans have flocked to own it on DVD to keep watching it at home. Whether you are an aspiring chef, a person searching for their place in life or just a person that enjoys a good comedy drama, then Julie and Julia on DVD will find a great spot in your collection.

Julie & Julia is a film that should be relished with gusto--accompanied by the freshest and best ingredients, pounds of butter, and bottles of the very best wine. It lovingly celebrates the life of one of American food's most influential and beloved figureheads: Julia Child--played here with zest, humor, and a sweet, subtle respect by Meryl Streep, whose performance is spectacular. Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding. Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime. --A.T. Hurley
